Lex Libertas Book Club

A forge of thought — where, in our pursuit of greater levels of freedom, we also sharpen our skills to think like free people.

About the Book Club

The Lex Libertas book club is a platform through which contributors of Lex Libertas have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and insight. Books are chosen to cover diverse themes, including history, current affairs, philosophy, and relevant fiction. This will include contemporary books from within and outside South Africa, as well as some of the great books of Western civilization. There will be a rotation between easy-to-read books and books that will take more time to master. As part of the book club, reviews, articles, and analyses of these books will be distributed for discussion. Physical and online discussions will also be arranged, involving expert speakers from within and outside South Africa. The book club offers contributors the opportunity to tackle certain issues in a structured way and as a community, which better equips us to participate in the battle of ideas while promoting Lex Libertas' vision for a sustainable political order.

Ways to Participate

Contributors to Lex Libertas can participate in the book club in three ways:

Informal Participation

Informally, by reading only the books on our list that interest you, at your own pace. You will still receive access to articles and reviews and will still be invited to events.

Six-Book Program

This involves setting yourself the goal of reading six books during 2026. Discussions will be arranged for each of these books. The books will cover different themes and will vary in length and density.

Twelve-Book Program

This involves setting yourself the goal of reading twelve books during 2026. Discussions will not be arranged for each of these books, but the themes discussed in the additional six books will align with those that will be covered during discussions.
